Over five decades Suzanne Archer has established herself as a painter, sculptor and installation artist. Primarily known for her large textural paintings, her work has been shown and collected by many institutions across Australia and abroad, including Campbelltown Arts Centre. Archer has maintained an impressive career that cements her position within abstraction and expressionism, a position defined by the objects and thematics she presents in her work.

Archer has strong ties to Campbelltown, living and working in the bush suburb Wedderburn for over 30 years where a number of resident artists play a significant role in contributing to the artistic and cultural fabric of the region. In 2019 Campbelltown Arts Centre will present Suzanne Archer’s 50 year retrospective exhibition titled, Suzanne Archer: Song of the Cicada. A corresponding monograph of the same title will also be launched in late 2019, celebrating this artist’s illustrious career.

The exhibition will explore three major themes which recur in Archer’s practice – death and skeletons, travel and landscapes – and will trace Archer’s artistic success and personal tales.  Linking these three major themes is Archer’s recurring fascination with text, pointing toward the diversity of mediums in Archer’s practice that span painting, sculpture, works on paper and sound. The exhibition will also feature new work commissioned by Campbelltown Arts Centre proclaiming that for Archer, there is still a lot more to come.
