Fiji Day

Thursday 10 October, 12pm – 6pm

Ni sa bula! During the 2019 Spring Holidays, for one day only, Campbelltown Arts Centre will be hosting a special Fiji Day family event celebrating the connected vibrancy of Fijian culture and the Marama Dina exhibition. The gallery will be overflowing with short workshops and performances led by artists in the exhibition, including: masi decorating, adornment making and tattoo drawing. In addition to the workshops, there will be curator tours of the exhibition, games, film showings and at 3pm and 5pm Kiddies Cushion Concert performances from Matavai Pacific Cultural Arts, Pauliasi, Ilisavani and MC Trey.

Masi Workshops | 1pm – 2pm, 3pm – 4pm

Masi is a culturally significant cloth created from the bark of a paper mulberry tree used to celebrate major events. During this workshop, you will discover the meaning of traditional Masi symbols before experimenting with stencilling, printing and freehand painting in order to create your own design along with artist Asinate Yaranamua. Once your Masi is complete, use your stencil to contribute to a large scale collective Masi or take home your piece as a memento of your day and a one-of-a-kind wall decor.

Adornment | 2pm – 3pm, 4pm – 5pm

Culture meets fashion in this workshop for participants to create and be photographed in a unique piece of body adornment. During the workshop, you will explore individual and cultural representation as you combine together a variety of materials to create your new look with acclaimed Fijian designer Bayvick Lawrence. Upon completion, model and embody your adornments in a fashion photoshoot within the exhibition.

Weaving | 1pm – 2pm, 3pm – 4pm
Drop in, join the circle and experience the joy of a tight weave and tight community with artist Yasbelle Kerkow. During the workshop you will learn the basics of weaving flax and pandanas as you try your hand at making your own bangle or armlet. Upon completion, be sure to join the adornment workshop to complete your look and be photographed in your creations.

Exhibition Tour | 12.30pm
Discover the layers and themes of Marama Dina along with artists and curatorium members, Salote Tawale and Donita Hulme. During the tour, Salote and Donita will be walking you through the galleries sharing their personal story and passion for the exhibition which involved a two year artistic and cultural journey connecting with Fijian women from across Western Sydney.

Relax, do a tattoo drawing, play a traditional Fijian game or enjoy two family friendly films from the Pasifika Film Festival in the communal gathering space. Full details on the films below.
