Established in 2015, the Aboriginal Women’s weaving program is a weaving group who meet each month at Campbelltown Arts Centre to share knowledge, stories and culture. The workshops are specifically designed for Aboriginal women living and working in South-West Sydney and are facilitated by Aunty Phyllis Stewart – a Yuin/ Dharawal artist and master weaver and maker, based in Gerringong. Utilising locally grown and harvested fibres, the women in the group engage and connect with the tradition of weaving learning traditional techniques to create contemporary forms and combine new materials into their works. The name of the group Yirran Miigaydhu weavers was collectively chosen in 2018, and means ‘many women weaving’ in Dharawal language.

Exhibiting in Cement Fondu’s Project Space, the Yirran Miigaydhu weavers will showcase a selection of artworks showcasing their learnt techniques of weavers through a selection of woven pieces. This exhibition will complement, The Ropes Amrita Hepi x Adrian Piper exhibition which is presented as part of the 2019 Sydney Festival Program. Opening Friday 11 January 6-8pm at Cement Fondu.
